Jane Wåhlstedt lamp, Sweden, 1950s
Vintage barrel‑shaped ceramic lamp decorated in delicate blue and white. The rounded body tapers slightly towards the top and is crowned by a brass collar. Around the sides, Wåhlstedt’s characteristic hand‑painted folk‑art motifs show stylized birds flanking tall leaf forms, surrounded by small floral elements and framed by a band of circles and lines near the base.
Jane Wåhlstedt was a Swedish mid‑century ceramic artist whose work for Jani Keramik in Laholm is celebrated for its lively folk‑art imagery, confident brushwork and strong sense of pattern.
She covered plates, bowls, vases and lamps with stylized birds, fish, women, flowers and leaves, usually outlined in fluid blue or dark lines over light clay grounds, creating pieces that feel both playful and carefully composed.
Working with her husband Nils Larsson in a small studio workshop rather than a factory, she designed both the forms and their decorations, so each object combines practical function with a distinct artistic personality. Today her ceramics are considered among the finest examples of 1950s–60s Laholm pottery and remain highly collected for their graphic charm and unmistakable Scandinavian character.
