Alfaraz figurine by Miguel Durán Lóriga, Spain, 1950s
This vintage ceramic figurine depicts a stylized standing woman in traditional dress, with a tall, flaring skirt and broad shouldered cloak or hood.
The figure is glazed in a mottled bluish‑grey with rich ochre‑yellow panels that pick out the cloak edges, bodice, apron, and a small basket she holds in front of her. Incised texture within the yellow areas gives the impression of woven fabric and decorative trim, adding a tactile, hand‑crafted feel.
Founded in 1952 by Miguel Durán-Lóriga in Alcalá de Henares near Madrid, Alfaraz became known for inventive ceramics that shaped mid-20th-century Spanish design.
The studio produced both small decorative mid-century pieces and larger architectural ceramic murals, from stylish bowls and vases to vibrant public installations. Its work is notable for strong craftsmanship and bold forms, making it a key reference in Spanish modernist ceramics of the period.
