René Maurel bowl
Mid-century decorative bowl by René Maurel.
René Maurel was born in Paris in 1910 and spent his entire childhood there. In 1923, he graduated from high school and enrolled for three years at the École des Arts Appliqués.
René Maurel relocated to the Côte d'Azur after the war. He worked in Vallauris for Giraud while residing in Golfe-Juan before working for himself. François Raty, who had studied pottery with him, joined him.
He moved from Vallauris to open La Poterie de la Tour in the remote village of Tourettes-sur-Loup in 1955 or 1956. He worked as a ceramicist there until 1974 before focusing solely on painting until his death in 1986.
